Harmony – Consciousness – Study

The study of the consciousness in harmony

Sophrology combines breathing exercises, simple movements and visualisation, guided in a state of relaxation, to bring better awareness and harmony to the body and mind and to reach inner resources. It can be easily re-enacted in everyday life – in the workplace, on the train, in an exam, in the classroom – to help overcome specific obstacles, such as stress and anxiety, and to help foster a state of calmness and positivity.

The 5 principles of Sophrology

Body awareness

We learn to listen to our body

Objective Reality

We learn to accept things as they are with no judgement.

Positive Action

We bring our attention on the positive, creating a positive-chain reaction.

Repetition

The more you practice the greater the benefits.

Adaptability

The sophrologist adapts his session (exercises, words, pace, terpnos logos) to his client or group – the client creates his own tool box with exercises that suit and work for him.

What is a Sophrology session?

A time to tune in

A Sophrology session lasts between 45 minutes to one hour and is divided in three different times.

  • Check-in time

For the first session, this time will be slightly longer than in subsequent sessions, in order to ascertain information about what you would like to achieve from the sessions and to gain an overview of your present state of wellbeing. In each subsequent session it will be used to discuss your practice of Sophrology in the intervening period since your previous session, including any stumbling blocks, and progress that you might have made.

  • Practice time

Seated or standing with your eyes closed (if you are happy to do so) you will be guided through exercises combining simple gentle movements, breathing, and visualisation, helping you to listen in and connect to your inner resources. This is the main and longest time of the session.

  • Description of the phenomena

During this time you will feedback how the session was experienced (sensations/feelings/visualisation…). This enables you to anchor the experience into your consciousness, and your Sophrologist to build the next session from the knowledge of what suits and works for you.

  • Sophrology is not magical

Daily practice of 10 to 20 minutes is recommended if you want to see real changes. The more practice you can do, the more effective the techniques will become. To help you with practice, clients are encouraged to make an audio  recording of each session, in order to have a guided session to work with at home.

Four to five guided sessions are needed to master the basic techniques and for you to become independent enough to use the tools in your specific everyday settings.

A highly respected discipline and philosophy in Continental Europe for over 60 years

It was created in Spain in 1960’s by Professor Alfonso Caycedo, a neuropsychiatrist, who wanted to study consciousness. He studied Hypnotherapy, Phenomenology, Relaxation, Yoga, Japanese Zen, Budhist Meditation and created a unique blend of these techniques refined by years of practice by him and his students.

Initially developed with Mental Health in mind, the flexibility and adaptability of this technique meant it quickly spread to other fields such as mental preparation in sport, birth preparation, sleep, stress management to name a few.

It is now very well respected in Continental Europe and especially Spain, Switzerland, Belgium and France where you can find Sophrologists in hospitals, schools and universities or in the corporate world and where GPs refer patients to Sophrologists.

In the UK, Sophrology is recognised by the Complementary Medical Association and the Institute of Complementary and Natural Medecine.
